Demographics show that northwest Calgary is populated by people from a number of different cultures and language groups. In an effort to assist those in the local neighbourhoods who wish to improve their Comprehension and/or Conversational English, we established an adult ESL (English as a Second Language) / ELL (English Language Learning) program, which is offered at no charge. We hold two sessions a year with an average of ten (10) to thirteen (13) weeks per session. The Winter session begins in January and the Fall session begins in September. Classes meet on Monday evenings from 7:00 pm–9:00 pm.
Participants range from long-time residents to recent immigrants, and international students to those on work visas. Our students have come from Syria, Taiwan, China, South Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Egypt, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Spain, Hungary, South Sudan, Kazakhstan, Nicaragua, Cameroon, Iran, Guatemala and Venezuela. The average attendance at each session has been about 15 students in the fall and 10 in the winter.
Students are divided into Beginner, Intermediate and/or Advanced groupings, dependent on the assessed need and the number of students, with one or two volunteers to guide each group. Special events are part of the curriculum, and in the past have included a traditional Christmas Dinner with singing, playing games, and the telling of the Christmas story, and an Ethnic Potluck and Games night.
If you or someone you know would like to be a student, or if you would like more information, please email [email protected] or call the church office at 403-239-0104. You can also come to one of the classes on a Monday evening.
The Registration Form can be picked up at one of the classes and is also found at the link below. If you prefer, you may print it out and fill it in at home, then bring it to the first class you attend.
Due to Covid 19 restrictions at this time, no fall or winter 2020-21 classes have been scheduled.
